Race Info

What am I signing myself up for?

You are signing up for one of the most unique running experiences of your life. Prepare to reach new heights of euphoria that no amount of endorphins can take you. The Bison 50 Relay will take you across the Sunflower State from the state capitol of Topeka to the beloved college town of Lawrence, a total of 50 miles. Now we realize that 50 miles is quite the workout so we’ve broken it down into manageable legs to allow you to accomplish this bison-sized feat with a little help from your friends.

What’s with the Bison?

The bison (or if you prefer, the American buffalo) portrays certain qualities that we are looking for in our competitors –rugged looks, brute strength, and sheer toughness. It may not be swift or have the greatest endurance, but neither would you if you weighed 1,800 pounds. Oh yeah and it’s the official state animal of Kansas. You’ll find it everywhere from the State Quarter to the State Flag to the State Song (“Home on the Range”).

Race Start

7:15am at Garry Gribble’s Running Sports – Topeka Store in Westridge Plaza,  2130 SW Wanamaker Rd Topeka, KS 66614. Everyone will start a the same time for maximum visibility and companionship. Sunrise is at 7:46am on Race Day so bring a headlamp or flashlight for part of the first leg.

We are super excited about our timing device for The Bison 50! Each solo and team will be given a chip that velcro’s onto the wrist or ankle. Team members will pass the chip to the next runner at the exchange points and we should have an accurate time at the finish line!

Team Size

You can have up to 10 runners on a team. However, the fewer people you have, the more it will cost per person. You can add/subtract people to your team after you have registered on line, as long as it stays within your selected registration category.

S.W.A.G. (Stuff We All Get)

All participants will receive entry into the Bison 50 relay, a tech shirt, special item for solo runners, a gift for all runners, post-race meal ticket, two beers (or non-alcoholic beverages if preferable), and more!

Each team is responsible for transporting their teammates to the appropriate location at the appropriate time. Once you drop runner #1 off at the start, you will drive to Exchange #1 to drop off runner #2 and pick up runner #1. Repeat this process for all ten legs. A team may have multiple vehicles on the course if necessary (each person must have a seat belt.) However, there may only be one vehicle per team at each exchange point to minimize traffic. If your team is using two vehicles, we recommend putting runners #1-5 in one vehicle and runners #6-10 in the second vehicle. You can maintain communication between vehicles via morse code (or if you prefer, text messaging.)

Showers At The End Of The Race

Take your own towel to the Lawrence Community Building (open until 5 pm), 115 W 11th Street, Lawrence, KS 66044, four blocks from the after party at The Mass Street Pub, 728 Massachusetts St, Lawrence, KS 66044.

Awards will be given to the top men’s, women’s, and mixed teams in each category (2 Person, Ultra, and Regular Teams). Special awards will be given to winners of the Solo division. All solo and two team participants will be receive a finisher belt buckle and a pint glass. Relay team participants will each receive a finisher medal and pint glass. There will be a team costume contest judged by the race directors.
